In order to helping our customer have a better knowledge about OBD II,we’d like to provide more knowledge about obd code reader . Here are some rapid fire OBD II questions and answers:

Q: How do we know if a vehicle has an OBD II emissions problem?

A: The MIL will be on and a DTC will be stored in memory. (Multiple DTCs may be stored.)

Q: Can the MIL come on even if the fault in the system doesn’t cause a performance problem?

A: Yes. The MIL is illuminated for emissions problems, not performance problems.

Q: Who turns on the MIL?

A: The PCM

Q How does the PCM know there is a problem?
A: It runs tests called Monitors

Q: When does it run these tests?
A: During normal driving, when conditions are just right to run the test.

Q: How does the PCM know there is a problem?

A: It receives information from sensors and performs tests of its own on actuators to see if they are working

properly.

Q: Can we watch the data used to make these decisions?

A: We can view data parameters on a scan tool.

Q: Are all scan tools created equal?

A: No. But there is a minimum standard for OBD II scan tools. It’s referred to as the Generic scan tool interface.

Update of Diagnostic Software

User Registration
Log on www.X431.com. Select the favorite language on the pull-down menu at the lower right of the interface to enter the homepage.
See Figure 4-01.

Click “Register” in the interface shown in Figure 4-01 to open the window as shown in Figure 4-02.

Note:
When the member purchases one or more products after registration, he should log onto the member area, and then click “product control” to register the newly purchased product. Refer to the section “Member login”.

The terms of service is shown in the screen. After reading and fully understand it, creader v click “I accept” button to enter the interface shown in Figure 4-02.

Fill in Product Information

Fill in product serial No., registration No. and dealer code in the interface shown in Figure 4-03.

The serial No. is marked on the back of SMARTBOX. The registration No. is in an envelope delivered with the product (the number must be kept confidential). The dealer code is attached on the last page of the user’s manual.

After the information is filled, click “Next step” to enter the next interface shown in Figure4-05.

Note:
When a product is sold, the dealer will log onto www. X431. com and enter the dealer code in the “Dealer administration” area so that the user can do effective registration later. User should contact the dealer if registration can not be done effectively.

If the filled serial No. or registration No. is invalid, the screen will display the message as shown in Figure 4-04. Click “OK” button to return to the previous interface to re-fill the correct numbers.

After information is filled in the interface shown in Figure 4-05(The red textbox must be filled.
After registration, we will send the confidential information to your registered e-mail, so please make sure that your e-mail is valid.),

Readout of Fault Code in Automotive

Self-diagnosis System
The fault in vehicle electronic system is stored in KAM of ECU as fault code. The fault code can be read out by the on board diagnostic system or external gm tech2 scan tool.

The on board diagnostic system in different vehicle may indicate the fault in different way. In general, the following ways are popular:
- Blinking of fault indicators on the instrument panel
- Swing of multimeter index
- Blinking of red/green LED on ECU
- Shown by a special device

The more intuitionist way for showing the fault is by external scan tool.

The diagnostic system of modern cars is equipped with diagnostic socket or DLC (data link connector). Fault code in vehicle ECU can be read out by connecting a scan tool to the diagnostic socket. In early time, each vehicle system had its own type of diagnostic socket. Since 1996, SAE has specified a uniform system called OBDII on board diagnostic system. Each vehicle that is made in accordance with the system may have the same diagnostic socket, same definition of pin and same description of fault code. The control units of every system are connected to bus, so only one diagnostic socket is needed for readout of fault code. OBD provides the possibility of reading data stream and displaying working status of switches and actuators. Moreover, external scan tool can send commands to activate the actuators.

X431 Master is such an external scan tool for vehicle diagnosis. It not only has the diagnostic function like reading fault code, reading data stream, actuation test, displaying sensor waveform, coding control unit, etc., but also has PDA function.

Three situations about DS708 Data Manager

When you click on Maxidas ds708 Data Manager from the Home screen , the Data Manager screen appears. There are mainly three options for using Maxidas DS708: The functions of playback, data logging and screen capture.

  1.  Playback Function                                                                                                                                                                                           The Playback function allows you to view data recorded with various functions. It also allows you to save and delete recorded files. When you click on the Playback icon from the Data Manager Screen, the Playback screen appears, as shown below.
  2. Data Logging                                                                                                                                                                                            Data logging is the process of recording events in order to provide a collection of data that can be used to diagnose vehicle communication problems. It can benefit the users by providing quick fix to software problems from the engineers. When you click on the Data Logging icon from the Data Manager Screen, the Data Logging screen appears, as shown below.
  3.  Screen Capture                                                                                                                                                                                                 The Screen Capture function is used to take an image by the scan tool to record the visible items displayed on the monitor. The screen shots can be used to demonstrate a particular problem a user might be having so that he can show the output to customer support engineers for help.When you select the Screen Capture icon from the Data Manager screen , the Screen Capture screen appears, as shown below.

Maxidas ds708 Custom Live Data

In our last article on Maxidas ds708, we talk about how to use Maxidas ds708 Basic Live Data.We’d like to talk more
Custom Live Data based on Basic Live Data.

The Maxidas ds708 Custom Live Data function allows you to select specific data items to display on the standard Live Data screen.
You should  obey these following 4  steps to use the Custom Live Data function:

 

  • Display the Function Menu screen.

  • Click on Custom Live Data. This displays the Custom Live Data selection screen.

  • Select the data items to include in the Live Data isplay as follows:
  1. Click on the data item to select. A check mark appears in the box on the left side of the item.
  2. Use the Pg Up or Pg Dn keys to display the data item if the desired data items are not on the current display.

NOTE: To deselect an item, select the item again by clicking on the item. Optionally, use the Select All and Clear All function keys to select or deselect all of the items at once.

 

  • When finished selecting data items, click on the OK function key to display the selected items on the Custom Live Data screen.

Composition of Vehicle ECU

Vehicle x431 master ECU consists of ALU, CPU, power source and memory.

i. ALU
It converts the electronic signal from each sensor into digital signal needed by CPU.

ii. CPU
The digital signal is transferred to CPU for computation and logical operation so that correct air/fuel mixture can be obtained. CPU can also compute ignition timing and idle speed, and control exhaust, fuel and diagnostic systems.

iii. Power source
The reference output signal (5V) of ECU and the 12V voltage for control module are from vehicle battery. Memory is also dependent on the power supplied by the battery.

iv. Memory
ECU contains three types of memory: ROM, RAM and PROM (or EEPROM).

- ROM
ROM stores the programming information that can only be read by ECU. The program in ROM is not editable. Power cut will not damage the data in ROM.

- RAM
It is for temporarily storing the inputted data, fault code and computed result. Power cut will make all information in RAM erased.

- PROM
Its program is made by manufacturer to suit the application of transmission, engine, exhaust control, driveability, rear axle ratio, etc. PROM is can be detached from ECU and power cut will not damage the data in it.

- EEPROM
Its function is similar to PROM. The difference between EEPROM and PROM is that EEPROM can be re-programmed by manufacturer with a special device.

All about How to use Maxidas ds708 Basic Live Data

The Live Data function allows you to view live data from a vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU). This article
describes Basic Live Data procedure. To use the Maxidas ds708 Live Data function, please follow these steps.

1.Test Startup and Vehicle Connection  to display the Function  Menu screen.

2.Click on Live Data. This displays the Live Data screen.

3.Notice the following about the Live Data screen:  Each line displays a data item.

  1. Each line displays a data item.
  2. You use the PG Up and PG Down Direction buttons to scroll through the page of data and use the stylus pen to select lines (one line at a time).
  3. The screen’s data updates as the software reads from the vehicle’s ECU. Each update is called a “frame” of data.
  4. You can stop and start the live readings at any time by clicking on the Pause button. When you stop the readings, the data “freezes” on the screen.
  5. The function keys and options at the top and on the right of the screen allow you to perform several other functions on the screen.

4.When you are finished using   the screen, click on ESC to return to the Function Menu screen.

The setup functions screen contains options for viewing information about the scan tool and adjusting default settings for the scan tool. There are 10 parts of Setup functions of Maxidas ds708 .Different parts, different usage.

  • Wi-Fi – sets up the Wi-Fi network.
  • Network – sets up the Ethernet network.
  • Unit – sets the unit of measure.
  • Date/Time – sets the date and time.
  • Language – sets the default language for the scan tool software.
  • Backlight – adjusts the backlight of the screen.
  • Beep – sets the beep of the scan tool.
  • Touch – calibrates the touch screen.
  • Remote Desk – sets the remote desk.
  • About – provides information about the scan tool, such as software version, operating system software version, hardware version, product serial No., etc. 

However, before taking full advantage of these functions,you should access the System Setup functions follow the steps below:

  1. Ensure that the scan tool is connected to a power source and the power LED light is illuminated.
  2. Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the scan tool and wait for the home screen to appear.
  3. Click on Setup/Help. This displays the Click on Setup/Help.
  4. Select the item to adjust.
